About the YMCA
The YMCA of New Canaan serves as a central hub for health, wellness, youth development, and community connection for local residents. Located in southern CT, the community’s vision was to create a fully resilient emergency community shelter; ensuring the YMCA remained a safe, reliable refuge when the community needs it most. The Vision
Located in southern CT, the community’s vision was to create an emergency shelter to keep residents safe during natural catastrophes. Recognizing the need for dependable power during outages, the town set out to transform this facility into a fully resilient community emergency shelter.
The Challenge
However, the existing infrastructure lacked sufficient backup power to support the facility’s full electrical load. A system was needed to meet energy demands while maintaining reliability and safety, all within a limited footprint.
The Solution
Kinsley provided a microgrid solution pairing a 285 kW Combined Heat & Power unit with a 688 kWh Battery Energy Storage System.
- The CHP provides high-efficiency power generation independent of the grid.
- The BESS enables the system to store energy.
- The result is consistent power delivery, achieving onsite energy independence.
- Manual controls allow strategic load shedding, optimizing energy use.
