About Yonkers WWTP

 The Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant is a 90–145 MGD facility on the Hudson River serving ~500,000 residents in southern and western Westchester County. Originally built in 1931, it treats wastewater using screening and primary treatment. 

The Challenge

The Yonkers Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the largest facilities in the country, serving over 500,000 residents. The plant was producing an excessive biogas from its anaerobic digesters that needed to be flared. The site was also poly-constrained. The utility was not able to provide the power needed for increased aeration.  

The Details

Aided by funding from NYPA, KES integrate the new CHP system within the active wastewater facility. The team addressed process steam distribution, electrical tie-ins, biogas handling, emissions compliance, interconnection constraints, and equipment siting.  

The Solution

KES designed a solution built around two 1.2MW TEDOM engines, a Heat Recovery Steam Generator producing low-pressure process steam, and integrated controls across Kinsley supplied equipment. The outcome was a fully islanded system, using a custom biogas blending solution to provide power using the county’s excess biogas.
